SolarWinds IPAM integration

SolarWinds IP Address Manager through the Orion Information Service (SWIS) REST API on a self-hosted Orion platform: run SWQL queries over the IPAM entities (subnets, IP nodes, DHCP scopes, DNS zones, groups), read, update and delete a single entity by its SWIS URI, update or delete many at once, and call the IPAM management verbs that change an address status, create a subnet, settle a reservation or write a DNS A record. The whole service is one JSON endpoint per operation, so every tool here pins one SWIS operation. Point the credential at your own Orion server including the SWIS port (17774 on current releases, 17778 on older ones) and authenticate with an Orion individual account.

Say what should happen.
The workflow builds itself.

When this happens, do that in SolarWinds IPAM.Built from the 13 SolarWinds IPAM tools below, on the connection you add once.

Common SolarWinds IPAM use cases

  • auditing subnet utilisation
  • inspecting one subnet in full
  • decommissioning a subnet record
  • annotating a subnet with a comment
  • tagging a set of subnets in one pass
  • reserving an address for a new server
  • onboarding a newly allocated network range
  • cleaning up DNS when a host is decommissioned
  • querying IPAM with values from an earlier step
  • removing a decommissioned range of subnet records

What you can do with SolarWinds IPAM

Each of these is one operation on one endpoint, available both as a workflow step and as a tool an AI agent can call on its own. Nothing bundles several operations into one action, so what a run did stays readable afterwards.

Most endpoints run on the free plan. A few, mainly the ones that publish on your behalf, need a paid plan.

Entity, 5 operations

  • bulk_delete_entitiesBulk delete entitiesPOSTDeletes every entity in a list of SWIS URIs.
  • bulk_update_entitiesBulk update entitiesPOSTWrites the same set of properties onto every entity in a list of SWIS URIs.
  • delete_entityDelete entityDELETEDeletes one Orion entity identified by its SWIS URI.
  • read_entityRead entityGETReads all properties of one Orion entity identified by its SWIS URI.
  • update_entityUpdate entityPOSTWrites new values onto the properties of one Orion entity.

Ip address, 3 operations

  • cancel_ip_reservationCancel ip reservationPOSTCancels a temporary reservation so the IP address becomes available again.
  • change_ip_statusChange ip statusPOSTMarks one IP address as used, available, reserved or transient in IPAM.
  • finish_ip_reservationFinish ip reservationPOSTEnds a temporary reservation on an IP address and applies its final status.

Dns record, 2 operations

  • add_dns_a_recordAdd dns a recordPOSTAdds a DNS A record for a host name on an IPAM managed DNS server.
  • remove_dns_a_recordRemove dns a recordPOSTRemoves a DNS A record from an IPAM managed DNS server.

Query, 2 operations

  • run_parameterized_queryRun parameterized queryPOSTRuns a SWQL SELECT with named bind parameters and returns the matching rows.
  • run_queryRun queryGETRuns a SWQL SELECT against the Orion database and returns the matching rows.

Subnet, 1 operation

  • create_subnetCreate subnetPOSTCreates an IPv4 subnet in IPAM from an address and a CIDR mask.

Use SolarWinds IPAM from Claude Code, Cursor or Codex

Connect SolarWinds IPAM in LiveContext, create an API key in Settings, then add the LiveContext MCP server to your client. Its SolarWinds IPAM operations become tools the client can call, next to every other integration you connected.

Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http livecontext https://livecontext.ai/mcp --header "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
Codex (~/.codex/config.toml)

How to connect SolarWinds IPAM

  1. Create your workspace

Sign up free. Nothing to install.

  2. Connect SolarWinds IPAM once

Add your SolarWinds IPAM connection in Settings. Every tool from this integration reuses it, and secrets are encrypted at rest and visible only to you.

  3. Describe the job in chat

The workflow builds itself in front of you and picks the endpoints it needs. Drag the steps yourself on the canvas whenever you would rather be explicit.
