Google Books integration

Google Books API v1. Search the Google Books catalogue and read the bibliographic, sale and access information of a volume, browse another user's public bookshelves, and manage the signed-in user's own library: list shelves, add, remove and reorder volumes on them, read and write reading positions, and create, list and delete annotations. Search works with an API key alone, everything under the personal library needs the OAuth grant modelled here.

Common Google Books use cases

  • cleaning up annotations created by a test run
  • clearing finished books off the Reading now shelf
  • putting the next book to read at the top of a shelf
  • exporting highlights from a book into a notes system
  • reporting reading progress across a personal library
  • resolving an ISBN to a title, author and cover image
  • importing a public reading list into a workflow table
  • checking how many books are on a shelf before syncing it
  • displaying a public reading list curated by a known user
  • syncing reading progress from another reading application

What you can do with Google Books

Each of these is one operation on one endpoint, available both as a workflow step and as a tool an AI agent can call on its own. Nothing bundles several operations into one action, so what a run did stays readable afterwards.

Most endpoints run on the free plan. A few, mainly the ones that publish on your behalf, need a paid plan.

Bookshelf, 8 operations

  • POSTadd_volume_to_bookshelf

Adds a book to one of the signed-in user's shelves.

  • POSTclear_bookshelf_volumes

Empties one of the signed-in user's shelves.

  • GETget_my_bookshelf

Retrieves one of the signed-in user's bookshelves.

  • GETget_public_bookshelf

    Retrieves a single public bookshelf.

  • GETlist_my_bookshelves

    Lists the signed-in user's bookshelves.

  • GETlist_public_bookshelves

    Lists another user's public bookshelves.

  • POSTmove_volume_in_bookshelf

Reorders a book on one of the signed-in user's shelves.

  • POSTremove_volume_from_bookshelf

Removes a book from one of the signed-in user's shelves.

Volume, 4 operations

  • GETget_volume

Retrieves the full record of a single volume.

  • GETlist_my_bookshelf_volumes

Lists the books on one of the signed-in user's shelves.

  • GETlist_public_bookshelf_volumes

Lists the books on another user's public bookshelf.

  • GETsearch_volumes

Searches books by title, author, subject or free text.

Annotation, 3 operations

  • POSTcreate_annotation

    Deletes an annotation.

  • GETlist_annotations

Lists the signed-in user's highlights and notes.

Reading position, 2 operations

  • GETget_reading_position

Retrieves how far the signed-in user has read in a book.

  • POSTset_reading_position

Records how far the signed-in user has read in a book.

User setting, 1 operation

Use Google Books from Claude Code, Cursor or Codex

Connect Google Books in LiveContext, create an API key in Settings, then add the LiveContext MCP server to your client. Its Google Books operations become tools the client can call, next to every other integration you connected.

How to connect Google Books

  1. Create your workspace

Sign up free. Nothing to install.

  2. Connect Google Books once

Add your Google Books connection in Settings. Every tool from this integration reuses it, and secrets are encrypted at rest and visible only to you.

  3. Describe the job in chat

The workflow builds itself in front of you and picks the endpoints it needs. Drag the steps yourself on the canvas whenever you would rather be explicit.
