AWS Step Functions integration

AWS Step Functions serverless workflow orchestration API. Build and manage state machines for orchestrating distributed applications and microservices using visual workflows.

Ask it in chat

Say what should happen.
The workflow builds itself.

When this happens, do that in AWS Step Functions.Built from the 37 AWS Step Functions tools below, on the connection you add once.

Common AWS Step Functions use cases

  • automate state machine management
  • automate execution management
  • automate activity management
  • describe state machine programmatically
  • automate resource management
  • blue/green deployments
  • reclaiming version quota
  • list tag programmatically
  • reviewing version history
  • cleaning up unused aliases

What you can do with AWS Step Functions

Each of these is one operation on one endpoint, available both as a workflow step and as a tool an AI agent can call on its own. Nothing bundles several operations into one action, so what a run did stays readable afterwards.

Most endpoints run on the free plan. A few, mainly the ones that publish on your behalf, need a paid plan.

State machine, 6 operations

  • create_state_machineCreate state machinePOSTCreate a new Step Functions state machine with an Amazon States Language definition. Supports STANDARD (long-running, at-least-once) and EXPRESS (short-duration, high-throughput) types.
  • delete_state_machineDelete state machinePOSTDelete a state machine. Running executions are not stopped; they continue until completion. The state machine is deleted even if executions are running.
  • describe_state_machineDescribe state machinePOSTRetrieve full details of a state machine including its name, ARN, definition, status, role, type, creation date, and logging configuration.
  • describe_state_machine_for_executionDescribe state machine for executionPOSTRetrieve the state machine definition and role ARN that was used for a specific execution. Returns the version of the definition active at execution start time.
  • list_state_machinesList state machinesPOSTList all state machines in the current AWS account and region. Returns a paginated list with name, ARN, type, and creation date for each machine.
  • update_state_machineUpdate state machinePOSTUpdate an existing state machine's definition, IAM role, logging configuration, or tracing configuration. Creates a new revision of the state machine.

Execution, 5 operations

  • describe_executionDescribe executionPOSTRetrieve the details, current status, input, and output of a specific execution. For completed executions, returns the final output or error information.
  • list_executionsList executionsPOSTList executions for a state machine, optionally filtered by status. Returns a paginated list with execution ARN, name, status, start date, and stop date.
  • redrive_executionRedrive executionPOSTRestart a FAILED or ABORTED execution from the last failed state, preserving execution history. Only applicable to STANDARD state machine executions within the redrive window.
  • start_executionStart executionPOSTStart a new execution of a STANDARD state machine. Returns an execution ARN. Asynchronous — check status with DescribeExecution or GetExecutionHistory.
  • stop_executionStop executionPOSTStop a running execution of a STANDARD state machine. Sets the execution status to ABORTED. Any in-progress activity tasks or Lambda invocations are not stopped.

State machine alias, 5 operations

  • create_state_machine_aliasCreate state machine aliasPOSTCreate an alias pointing to one or two state machine versions with configurable traffic weights for canary deployments.
  • delete_state_machine_aliasDelete state machine aliasPOSTDelete a state machine alias. Existing versions and in-progress executions are not affected.
  • describe_state_machine_aliasDescribe state machine aliasPOSTRetrieve details about a state machine alias including routing configuration and traffic weights.
  • list_state_machine_aliasesList state machine aliasesPOSTList all aliases for a state machine.
  • update_state_machine_aliasUpdate state machine aliasPOSTUpdate a state machine alias routing configuration or description for canary and blue/green deployments.

Activity, 4 operations

  • create_activityCreate activityPOSTCreate a Step Functions activity. Activities represent tasks performed by external workers that poll for work using GetActivityTask and report results via SendTaskSuccess or SendTaskFailure.
  • delete_activityDelete activityPOSTDelete a Step Functions activity. Any state machine executions waiting on this activity will time out with a States.Timeout error.
  • describe_activityDescribe activityPOSTRetrieve details about a specific activity including its name, ARN, and creation date.
  • list_activitiesList activitiesPOSTList all activities in the current AWS account and region. Returns a paginated list with activity name, ARN, and creation date.

Map run, 3 operations

  • describe_map_runDescribe map runPOSTRetrieve details about a Map Run, including its status, item counts (pending, running, succeeded, failed, skipped, aborted), execution counts, and tolerances. Map Runs are created by Distributed Map states.
  • list_map_runsList map runsPOSTList the Map Runs created by a specific execution of a Distributed Map state.
  • update_map_runUpdate map runPOSTUpdate the concurrency and failure tolerance settings of an in-progress Map Run.

State machine version, 3 operations

  • delete_state_machine_versionDelete state machine versionPOSTDelete a specific state machine version. Cannot delete versions currently referenced by aliases.
  • list_state_machine_versionsList state machine versionsPOSTList all published versions for a state machine, sorted newest first.
  • publish_state_machine_versionPublish state machine versionPOSTPublish a new immutable version of a state machine from its current revision.

Resource, 2 operations

  • tag_resourceTag resourcePOSTAdd or overwrite tags on a Step Functions resource (state machine or activity). Tags are key-value pairs used for cost allocation, access control, and resource organization.
  • untag_resourceUntag resourcePOSTRemove one or more tags from a Step Functions resource (state machine or activity) by specifying the tag keys to remove.

Activity task, 1 operation

  • get_activity_taskGet activity taskPOSTPoll an activity for a task to work on. Blocks for up to 60 seconds waiting for a task. Returns a task token and input when a task is available. Used by activity workers.

Execution history, 1 operation

  • get_execution_historyGet execution historyPOSTRetrieve the execution history events for a specific execution. Returns the full sequence of state transitions, task results, errors, and timing information.

State, 1 operation

  • test_stateTest statePOSTTest a state or state machine definition without creating a resource. Returns execution status, output, and diagnostics.

State machine definition, 1 operation

  • validate_state_machine_definitionValidate state machine definitionPOSTValidate an Amazon States Language definition and return diagnostics without creating a state machine.

Sync execution, 1 operation

  • start_sync_executionStart sync executionPOSTStart a synchronous execution of an EXPRESS state machine. Waits for the execution to complete and returns the result directly. Only supported for EXPRESS type state machines. IMPORTANT: This endpoint requires a different host than other Step Func...

Tag, 1 operation

  • list_tags_for_resourceList tags for resourcePOSTList all tags attached to a Step Functions resource (state machine or activity). Returns an array of key-value tag objects.

Task failure, 1 operation

  • send_task_failureSend task failurePOSTReport failure of an activity task or a callback task. Causes the waiting state machine execution to transition to the task's catch/retry error handling.

Task heartbeat, 1 operation

  • send_task_heartbeatSend task heartbeatPOSTSend a heartbeat to keep an activity task or callback task alive. Must be called before the heartbeatSeconds timeout expires, otherwise the task times out with States.HeartbeatTimeout.

Task success, 1 operation

  • send_task_successSend task successPOSTReport successful completion of an activity task or a callback task (using .waitForTaskToken). Sends the output back to the waiting state machine execution.

Use AWS Step Functions from Claude Code, Cursor or Codex

Connect AWS Step Functions in LiveContext, create an API key in Settings, then add the LiveContext MCP server to your client. Its AWS Step Functions operations become tools the client can call, next to every other integration you connected.

How to connect AWS Step Functions

  1. Create your workspace

Sign up free. Nothing to install.

  2. Connect AWS Step Functions once

Add your AWS Step Functions connection in Settings. Every tool from this integration reuses it, and secrets are encrypted at rest and visible only to you.

  3. Describe the job in chat

The workflow builds itself in front of you and picks the endpoints it needs. Drag the steps yourself on the canvas whenever you would rather be explicit.
